How Difficult is it to Walk the Dog?

چکیده
We study the complexity of computing the Fréchet distance (also called dog-leash distance) between two polygonal curves with a total number of n vertices. For two polygonal curves in the plane we prove an Ω(n log n) lower bound for the decision problem in the algebraic computation tree model allowing arithmetic operations and tests. Up to now only a O(n) upper bound for the decision problem was known. The Ω(n log n) lower bound extends to variants of the Fréchet distance such as the weak as well as the discrete Fréchet distance. For the one-dimensional case we give a linear-time algorithm to solve the decision problem for the weak Fréchet distance between one-dimensional polygonal curves.

Understanding how dogs encourage and motivate walking: cross-sectional findings from RESIDE
BACKGROUND Many people live with dogs but not all walk with them regularly. This study examines the demographic and behavioural factors that contribute towards owners reporting having a strong sense of encouragement and motivation to walk provided by their dogs, which we call 'the Lassie effect'. METHODS Data was collected from 629 dog owners participating in the RESIDE cross-sectional survey...
متن کاملStructuring Racist Ideologies in Stephen Crane’s “A Dark Brown Dog”: A Critical Discourse Analysis
This paper deals with the study of how racist ideologies are constructed in Crane’s “A Dark Brown Dog” using the CDA framework. Benefitting from the approaching between literature and linguistics, it focuses on the linguistic examination of the (re)construction of whiteness and blackness based on the assumption that racism is: a social, a discursive, and an ideological construct. This tri-dimen...
متن کاملI Walk My Dog Because It Makes Me Happy: A Qualitative Study to Understand Why Dogs Motivate Walking and Improved Health
Dog walking is a popular everyday physical activity. Dog owners are generally more active than non-owners, but some rarely walk with their dog. The strength of the dog-owner relationship is known to be correlated with dog walking, and this qualitative study investigates why. Twenty-six interviews were combined with autoethnography of dog walking experiences. Dog walking was constructed as "for ...

Backgrounds: One of the most common progressive destructive diseases in the central nervous system is multiple sclerosis. Its inflammatory process causes a wide range of limitations, including reduced control of posture and the ability to walk. Therefore, the aim of this review was to evaluate the effect of resistance training on body posture control and gait ability in patients with multiple s...
